A university in Hungary now formally accepts that it "has been forced out" from its Budapest base - after a weekend deadline to reach a deal with the government passed without any last-minute agreement.

"We can never again work as a free organization in the city and nation we call home," said the leader of the Central European University (CEU), Michael Ignatieff.

He depicted it as a "deplorable and genuine infringement of scholastic opportunity in the core of Europe".

The Hungarian government has rejected cases that it is an issue of scholarly opportunity - contending that the college has neglected to agree to advanced education directions.

The college, established by liberal donor George Soros to cultivate vote based system in post-Communist Central Europe, is presently moving a considerable lot of its courses to Vienna.

Mr Ignatieff said it was "remarkable" that a US-licensed college was being "constrained out of a Nato partner nation".
Students from the universities protested against the decision
